I have exciting news. I gave my phone number to a boy. On my own without his asking.
Not sure what Bye Bye Birdie has to do with anything, but it seemed appropriate.
Remember way back when I when I wrote about meeting a bartender and chatting with him and then coming the next weekend to flirt again but it was super busy? Well, it’s been a while, but I’d been busy with my family visiting, my birthday and finishing up my semester, so last night I finally went back. For some reason, even though it was a Saturday it was really empty. My good (and gregarious) friend made the initial connection, just in case he forgot us. But he didn’t. He remembered exactly where we were sitting at the bar and then we chatted about the James Joyce Ramble in which he’s running today (I meant to run it but I forgot to register and now I have no way of getting there).
Anyway, I was my normal shy self and also managed to drip ketchup and beer on myself, but later, when it was only Sapphire and I, he came back. We chatted a lot more, but as he was at work he had to leave and do his work type duties. I turned to Sapphire and said, “if he comes back, I’m totally giving his my number.” Especially since he squeezed my shoulder on his way out. Like a good friend, Sapphire voiced her true feelings and said I should have given it to him then…which in retrospect I should have done.
However, in my head, I didn’t want to give him my number until I left. It seems weird to give a guy your number while you’re still hanging around, especially since he might not want it. When we finally decided it was time to go he was chatting with a friend. We figured if we went to the bathroom, maybe said friend would go away in the mean time. Unfortunately, when we came out, there was another guy in the conversation. Being the somewhat stubborn person that I am, I was determined to give him the slip of paper with my name and number. So, I went up and wished him good luck on his race tomorrow and he gave me a half hug and I awkwardly gave him the paper. In front of his two friends.
I need to learn some smoother moves. But, I gave him my number! And even if I don’t hear from him I know that I can do this, and theoretically it will become easier.
P.S. see Rio! It’s fantastic!
